Social Security Administration Announces Compassionate Allowances Benefit for Men Diagnosed with Hormone-refractory Prostate Cancer

The Prostate Cancer Roundtable issued a press release today (January 20, 2014) commending the Social Security Administration (SSA) for adding hormone-refractory prostate cancer to the list of diseases and conditions that qualify for an expedited decision on an application for Social Security Disability benefits.

The Roundtable also offered a sincere “Thanks” to Congressman Elijah Cummings (D, MD) and his staff for pursuing this benefit and for all their work on behalf of the prostate cancer community.

The Compassionate Allowances benefit as explained on the SSA web page:

“Social Security has an obligation to provide benefits quickly to applicants whose medical conditions are so serious that their conditions obviously meet disability standards.

“Compassionate Allowances (CAL) are a way of quickly identifying diseases and other medical conditions that invariably qualify under the Listing of Impairments based on minimal objective medical information. Compassionate Allowances allow Social Security to target the most obviously disabled individuals for allowances based on objective medical information that we can obtain quickly. Compassionate Allowances is not a separate program from the Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income programs.”
